Flat rates, quoted before we book. California caps the notarial act itself at $15 a signature; everything on top of that is travel and handling, and we show you exactly what it is.

What California actually allows a notary to charge

Notary fees in California are not a free-for-all. Government Code section 8211 sets a maximum for each notarial act, and charging more than the prescribed fee is a ground for discipline against the notary's commission. These are the acts we perform and the statutory maximum for each, as published in the Secretary of State's 2026 Notary Public Handbook:

Notarial actMaximum fee
Acknowledgment or proof of a deed or other instrument, including the seal and the certificate$15 per signature
Administering an oath or affirmation to one person$15
Executing a jurat, including the seal$15
Certifying a copy of a power of attorney$15
All services in connection with taking a deposition$30
Administering the oath to a deposition witness$7
The certificate to a deposition$7

A notary may always charge less than the maximum, and in some cases must charge nothing at all.

We do not prepare immigration forms. California allows a notary who is separately qualified and bonded as an immigration consultant to charge for that work. We are not immigration consultants and we do not offer it. Preparing or advising on immigration paperwork is for a licensed attorney or a representative accredited by the Department of Justice. See notary, not notario.

When a California notary may not charge you anything

These are statutory, not goodwill, and very few notaries publish them:

  • US military veterans – no fee may be charged for notarizing an application or claim for a pension, allotment, allowance, compensation, insurance or any other veteran's benefit. See military and veterans notary.
  • Vote-by-mail ballot envelopes and other voting materials – no charge permitted.
  • Election nomination documents and a circulator's affidavit.
  • Notaries employed by a public entity, for certain pension-related affidavits and vouchers.

If one of those applies to you, say so when you book. We will tell you and we will not charge the notarial fee.

Travel fees: the part the statute does not cover

California caps the notarial act. It does not cap travel, and travel is not a notarial fee. The Secretary of State's handbook is explicit that travel fees, if any, must be identified separately. So a mobile notary may agree a travel fee with you, but must present it as what it is rather than folding it into the per-signature charge.

Here is exactly how our $95 visit fee breaks down, so there is no mystery in it:

What you payStatutory notarial feeTravel and minimum visit fee
$95 – visit with 1 signature$15$80
$95 – visit with 2 signatures$30$65
$95 – visit with 3 signatures$45$50
$110 – visit with 4 signatures$60$50
$125 – visit with 5 signatures$75$50

The notarial fee never exceeds the $15 per signature California allows, and beyond three signatures that is all you pay for each extra one. $50 of every visit is our travel charge for coming to you at a time of your choosing; with fewer than three signatures the balance is a minimum visit charge. Both are separate, disclosed fees agreed before we book. Anyone quoting you a per-signature notarial fee above $15 is either confused or doing something they should not.

About our pricing

Why is it $95 when California says $15?

Because those are two different fees. California caps the notarial act at $15 per signature, and that cap is all it covers. A mobile notary may also charge for travel and service, which is not regulated but must be agreed with you in advance and disclosed as separate. Our $95 covers the journey to you, the appointment itself and up to three notarized signatures. The table above shows the split for every case, because we would rather show you the arithmetic than hide it.

Are there any hidden charges?

No. We quote the full figure before booking. The only things that can be added are ones we tell you about first: printing at $1 a page, return shipping at $20, government filing fees at cost, and an agreed surcharge for genuinely exceptional jobs – a two-hour wait, a very remote location, extreme weather. Nothing is added after the fact.

How do I pay?

Most clients pay at the appointment. If you are an escrow, title or corporate client and need to be invoiced, ask when booking, or call (858) 888-8060.

What if I need to cancel?

Please give us at least four hours' notice by phone or email. For same-day bookings we only ask that you call as soon as you know. We do not charge for cancellations made in reasonable time – we would rather you called than left us on a doorstep.

What if the notary makes a mistake?

We correct errors and omissions caused by our notaries free of charge. Every California notary must also hold a $15,000 surety bond, which exists to protect the public.

Not sure which service you need?

Describe the document and where it is going. We will tell you what is actually required, including when the answer is “less than you were told”.
